If you are human, you are biased. Each of us makes assumptions based on our experiences. Unconscious biases are inclinations, or snap judgements, which unwittingly influence our perceptions and decisions. Most of us are not aware of the biases we have or the impact they cause. Yet implicit bias affects everything – where we live, where we work, how much money we make, who befriends us, who we elect, who we incarcerate, who we hire, and more. Through compelling stories, innovative research and high-impact interviews, bias brings the issue of implicit bias to the forefront of our consciousness.

Over three dynamic acts, bias reveals the ways in which implicit bias affects all of us – as individuals, in our workplaces and in the wider world. As the film unfolds, it explores new techniques for mitigating bias in a variety of settings: a police deadly force decision simulator, companies striving to block bias in hiring and promotion, and a virtual reality lab designed to reduce racial bias. In all of these contexts, the film asks, can we interrupt our bias?

Acting as a proxy for the viewer, director Robin Hauser appears on camera, turns inward, and interacts with innovative technologies to understand more about her own biases and how they shape her behavior. She experiences vulnerability, surprise, discomfort, and discovery, allowing viewers to identify with her realizations and reflect on their own biases.
